This series of photographs, Sobre la igualdad y las diferencias: casas gemelas (On Equality and Differences: Twin Houses) , taken in Havana in 2005, belongs to a wider group of works that the artist has been developing over many years, generally titled Bifurcaciones y encrucijadas (Forking Paths and Crossroads) . These works are dedicated to the collection and investigation of similarities and singularities. Some focus on things that are supposed or expected to be identical, but end up being slightly different.

De sino à sina (From Bell to Fate) is a six-channel sound installation by Carla Zaccagnini exploring the relationship between modern Brazil and its colonial past. The sound installation is made from a recording of the bell at Capela de Nossa Senhora do Rosário dos Homens Brancos, a Baroque-style chapel that is one of the first chapels in Ouro Preto (previously Vila Rica) in the region of Minas Gerais. The work references the execution of José da Silva Xavier (1746-1792), also known as “Tiradentes”.

Karla Dickens’s collage Beneath the skim board addresses issues of discrimination and racism towards Indigenous communities in Australia through a constellation of historical and current events. Dickens spent over a year collecting and modifying ubiquitous objects into sculptural collages that commemorate former circus performers of Indigenous Australian descent. Assembled from various fabrics, knick-knacks and other materials, these frenetic compositions celebrate the campy glamour of circus performers, but also articulates the hidden mistreatment experienced by the performers, and more broadly, the lives of Indigenous communities in Australia.

Studying the body in movement, this series of drawings depart from Karla Kaplun’s work A ztec BLAST® Workout (AWB) . Taking the form of a fitness training program, this work critically explores issues of cultural appropriation, focusing on the traditional “Conchero” Aztec dance. The Concheros dance—also known as the Chichimecas, Aztecas and Mexicas—is an important traditional dance and ceremony which has been performed in Mexico since early in the country’s colonial period.

Karla Black is a Scottish artist living in Glasgow . Her work draws from a multiplicity of artistic traditions from expressionist painting, land art performance, to formalism. Her large-scale sculptures incorporate modest everyday substances, along with very traditional art-making materials to create abstract forms.
